PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 2004, Stillwater, OK. Students at Skyline Elementary
recently wrote recorded and released a CD of original songs. Their
efforts were guided by award-winning childrens songwriter Monty
Harper, a Stillwater native. Harper spent two weeks at the school
writing and recording.
Harpers residency was set up to involve as many classrooms as
were interested, and all twenty groups from kindergarten through
fifth grade signed on. More than 350 students were involved with
the creation of five songs.
Harper collaborated with students on the songwriting, passing
ideas along from classroom to classroom. At the end of the week
students came together to hear their finished products, make any
last minute changes, and practice singing. That Friday evening
Harper and the students gave a concert for families at which all
five brand new songs were presented.
Harper spent time at home arranging the songs, then brought his
recording equipment to the school to add the kids own voices
to the mix.
The residency has been financed by sales of the students CD.
Skyline parents were given the first chance to purchase, and remaining
copies are now available to the public. Our Wacky World can be
ordered online at www.montyharper.com. It is also available at
The Cat and the Fiddle in Stillwater.
The CD includes five songs, karaoke versions of the five songs,
and several extra features that can be viewed on a personal computer.
The songs are If Kids Ruled the World, Creepy Crawly Party
Time, Pizza, Pizza, Everything is Changing, and Mixed Up
Wacky Song. The extras include lyrics, video footage of students
working on the songs, and a video of the final concert.
My hope, says Harper, is that the students who worked on these
songs will feel ownership and pride in their accomplishment, and
that each family who purchases a CD will agree that theyve added
some wonderful music to their collection!
