1907

1907 was a year to remember
That's what my grandpa’s grandpa said
With our city leaders drumming up a plan for indoor plumbing
Great Great Grandpa saw progress coming full speed ahead
That year he read about a gyroplane flight
Home air conditioning was well within sight
The downtown sparkled with electric light
And Oklahoma became a state

In 1907 at the Payne County Fair
Great Great Grandpa saw his very first automobile
He paid a nickel for a ride and got all rattled up inside
Cause could feel the future throbbing in that steering wheel
"The Coming of Columbus," was his first picture show
He danced to a cylinder of "Home Sweet Home"
He could talk clear to Kansas on the telephone
And Oklahoma became a state

My great great grandpa was a young man then
He rallied for statehood at the A&M
It took many years for the congress to say
That the Twin Territories could join the USA
So the territories waited sitting side by side
Like an Oklahoma bridegroom and an Indian bride
Then a whole lot of folks finally got to celebrate
When they married them together into one great state

The 16th of November was the day that they did it
My grandpa's grandpa told him all about the big to do
He took the Santa Fe to Guthrie, saw the wedding ceremony
And ate his fill of Gov'nor Haskell's Indian barbecue
And when the military drummers came marching down the bricks
All the kids waved flags to the rhythms of their sticks
And a star upon each flag bore the number 46
And Oklahoma became a state

Yes 1907 was a year to remember
And my great great grandpa knew it on that 16th of November
Excited crowds of people lined the streets to celebrate
And Oklahoma became a state
Yes Oklahoma became a state
