The What-if Game

Hey, let’s play a what-if game for safety sake
We’ll play this what-if game to help avoid mistakes
Cause you don’t have to do what every adult says
And you should always be prepared to use your head!

What if you’re
Walking to a friend’s house on a sunny day
When a car pulls up & stops in your way
The man says, “Hey, do you live on this street?
Can you help me find my dog? Won’t you hop into the seat?”
And you get this funny feeling
You know something isn’t right
You shout, “No, I won’t!” - you run away
Straight to your friend’s house - out of sight

We’re playing this what-if game for safety sake
We’re playing this what-if game to help avoid mistakes
Cause you don’t have to do what every adult says
And you should always be prepared to use your head!

What if you’re
Waiting for your mom after school, by the gate
You wonder where she is ‘cause it’s getting kind of late
A woman drives up and says, “Honey, come with me. Your
mother’s really sick - I’m gonna take you to see her.”
You get this funny feeling
She didn’t say the secret code
You shout “No, I won’t!” - you run away
You go back into the school and you tell the principal.

Keep on playing this what-if game for safety sake
Keep on playing this what-if game to help avoid mistakes
Your mom or dad will gladly play this game with you.
Make up your own what-ifs and then tell what you would do.

Verse 3: Instrumental (Make up your own situation.)

We’re playing this what-if game for safety sake
We’re playing this what-if game to help avoid mistakes
Cause you don’t have to do what every adult says
And you should always be prepared to use your head!

Yes you should...
Keep on playing this what-if game
for safety sake
Keep on playing this what-if game
to help avoid mistakes

About This Song

Monty wrote this song for "Project REACH - Safety Zone, Stay Alert" in 1997. The project was broadcast on WNYE in New York.

Visualizing possible situations and your reactions can help you prepare in case such things happen in real life. The companion song "No, Go, and Tell" teaches three things to do if someone is bothering you and you need to get help.

This song is not currently available as a recording.
